Short answer

A top sealing damper is a lid mounted at the top of the flue that closes on a rubber gasket. A cable from the fireplace opens and shuts it. Installed in place of a leaky throat damper, it keeps rain, insects and humid air out of the chimney when the fireplace sits unused.

How a Chimney Top Damper Works

A chimney top damper sits on the flue tile or crown at the top of the chimney. A spring holds the lid open; a stainless cable runs down the flue to a handle in the firebox. Pull the handle and the lid closes against a gasket, sealing the flue. Release it before a fire and the spring opens the lid.

Why It Beats a Worn Throat Damper

A cast-iron throat damper sits just above the firebox and rarely seals tightly once it has rusted. A top mount damper seals at the top of the chimney, so the whole flue is kept dry and closed off. It also acts as a cap with its screen, keeping animals out.

Is One Right for Your Fireplace

Chimney top damper installation suits most masonry chimneys with a wood fireplace. It is not used on factory-built fireplaces unless the maker lists one. We check the flue size, the crown and the fireplace before recommending it.

Signs This Job Is Due

A rusted or warped throat damper leaks air all year and lets humid outside air drift down into the house. A top sealing damper fixes that from the roof: a spring-loaded lid at the top of the flue, opened and closed by a cable down to the fireplace. Our crew sizes and fits it, and you see the price first.

  • A throat damper that is rusted, stuck or warped
  • Drafts or a musty smell from the fireplace
  • Humid air or bugs coming down the chimney
  • A damper frame too damaged to repair
