Short answer
A chimney sweep removes the soot, creosote and debris that build up inside a flue each time the fireplace is used. Our Stuart crew brushes the whole flue, cleans the smoke chamber and firebox, and checks the damper and cap so the next fire draws cleanly and safely.

What a Chimney Cleaning Actually Removes
Wood smoke cools as it climbs the flue, and some of it sticks to the walls as soot and creosote. Light soot is powdery and brushes away easily. Creosote that has been heated again and again turns crusty or even glossy, and it is the material that can catch fire inside a chimney. A proper chimney cleaning removes both before they build into a problem.
Debris matters too. Leaves, twigs, nesting material and pieces of broken mortar can all end up in a flue that sits unused through the summer. Our chimney sweep service clears that blockage, and chimney soot removal from the smoke chamber gives smoke a straight path out.
How We Sweep Your Chimney
We lay drop cloths at the hearth, seal off the fireplace opening and run a vacuum while we work, so soot stays in the chimney and not in your living room. Then we run rotary and wire brushes sized to your flue from the firebox up, or from the roof down when the layout calls for it.
After the chimney flue cleaning we clean the smoke chamber and smoke shelf, open and close the damper to check its seal, and look at the cap and screen. If something needs more than a sweep, we tell you and put it in writing; we do not add work to the bill on the spot.
Chimney Sweep and Inspection Together
Most homeowners book a chimney sweep and inspection on the same visit, because the clean flue is the best time to look at it. With the soot gone, cracks in flue tiles, gaps in mortar and a damaged smoke chamber are much easier to see. NFPA 211 recommends that chimneys be inspected every year and cleaned when deposits build up, and that is the routine we follow.
Odors, Blockages and Wood Stoves
A chimney that smells like an ashtray on humid afternoons usually has creosote in the flue mixing with damp air. Chimney odor removal starts with a thorough cleaning and often ends with a cap or damper fix that stops the moisture getting in.
A blocked chimney is a different job: we find what is in the way, remove it and check that nothing has been damaged. We also handle wood stove chimney cleaning, where the pipe and connector need the same attention as a masonry flue.
How Often Your Chimney Needs a Sweep
Fireplace chimney cleaning is about use, not the calendar. A fireplace lit most weekends in winter needs more attention than one used twice a year, and a flue that burned damp wood fills faster than one that burned dry hardwood. Regular chimney maintenance keeps the job small, and our chimney sweeps tell you honestly when your flue does not need cleaning yet.
Fireplace cleaning of the firebox and glass doors is part of every visit, so the hearth looks right when we leave.

Questions We Answer Often
Do you need to clean a chimney every year?
Not always. NFPA 211 calls for a yearly inspection, and a cleaning only when soot or creosote has built up in the flue. A fireplace used on a handful of cool nights may go two seasons between cleanings. Weekly fires through the winter usually mean a sweep every year, and burning damp wood shortens that gap further.
Does chimney cleaning get rid of the smell?
Cleaning removes the creosote and soot behind most fireplace odors, so the smell usually drops right away. When it returns on humid days, damp air is reaching the flue through a missing cap or a damper that does not seal, and that is the next thing we check.
Can a chimney sweep work in the rain?
Light rain does not stop a sweep that is done from inside the house through the firebox. Roof work is different: we will not climb a wet tile or shingle roof, so the cap and crown check moves to a dry day. When the weather turns, we tell you which part of the visit needs to be rescheduled.
Does chimney sweeping remove creosote?
Sweeping removes soft soot and flaky creosote well. Hard, glazed creosote that has baked onto the flue walls needs a separate removal step with chemical treatment or rotary tools. We tell you which kind your flue has after the first brushing, before any extra work is added to the estimate.
What should I do before the sweep arrives?
Let the fireplace go cold for at least a day so the ash and coals are fully out. Clear the hearth and a few feet in front of the firebox, and move anything fragile off the mantel before the crew arrives.
Will the sweep find a blocked chimney?
Yes, a sweep is the usual way a blocked chimney is found. Bird nests, leaves and fallen mortar show up as soon as the brushes meet resistance or debris drops into the firebox. We remove the blockage first. Then we check the cap and screen to see how it got in, and whether the screen needs replacing.
