Short answer

Chimney cap replacement swaps a rusted, bent or missing cap for a new one sized to your flue or crown. A good chimney cap keeps rain, leaves and animals out and stops sparks with its screen. Our crew measures on the roof, fits stainless steel or copper and fastens it firmly.

What a Chimney Cap Does

A chimney cap is a small metal roof over the flue. It sheds rain away from the flue opening, its mesh screen keeps birds and animals out, and on a wood-burning fireplace it acts as a chimney spark arrestor that catches embers before they reach the roof. A chimney rain cap also keeps downpours from soaking the smoke chamber and damper below.

On some homes the cap covers a single flue tile; on others a wider multi flue chimney cap covers two or three flues at once and sits on the crown. Both jobs need careful measuring, because a cap that is too small will not shed water and one that is too big catches the wind.

Stainless Steel, Copper and Galvanized

Galvanized steel caps are cheap at first and rust quickly in humid Florida weather. We usually recommend a stainless steel chimney cap, which holds up far longer, or a copper chimney cap when appearance matters. For chimney cap installation on a factory-built fireplace, the cap must be the one listed for that system, and we match it to the maker's parts.

Repair or Replace the Cap

Chimney cap repair makes sense when the cap is sound and only a fastener, a bent lid or a torn chimney screen needs attention. Once rust has eaten through the lid or the legs, a new chimney cap is the better value. We show you which way your cap leans before writing anything down.

Spark Arrestor Installation and Screen Sizing

Spark arrestor installation matters on homes close to dry landscaping. The mesh must be fine enough to stop embers but open enough to let smoke out and not clog with soot. We size the screen to the fireplace you use and clean it as part of a regular sweep.

Chimney Caps and Chimney Covers

Some people call any metal top a chimney cover, and others mean a full chase cover on a framed chimney. If your chimney is boxed in with siding or stucco and has a flat metal top, that top is a chase cover and is its own job. Our chimney caps sit on top of the flue or the chase cover, and we check both while on the roof.

How a Cap Replacement Goes

  1. Measure the flue

Flue tile or crown measured on the roof, not guessed from the ground.

  2. Choose the cap

Stainless steel or copper, single flue or multi flue.

  3. Fit and fasten

Old cap off, flue top checked, new cap fastened firmly.

  4. Check the screen

Mesh sized to stop sparks and animals without choking the draft.

What the Written Estimate Covers

  1. Measuring the flue tile or crown for the right cap
  2. Removing the old cap and checking the flue top
  3. Fitting and fastening the new cap and screen
  4. A tidy roof and the written price

Questions We Answer Often

Are chimney caps required by code?

The Florida Building Code sets the rules a spark arrestor must meet where one is fitted. A factory-built chimney has to use the cap listed for it. Even where a cap is not strictly required, it is low-cost protection for the flue against rain, animals and embers; we follow the code and the manufacturer's instructions for your system.

What happens if your chimney cap falls off?

Rain then falls straight into the flue, soaking the smoke chamber and the damper and rusting any metal parts. Birds and squirrels can move in within days. Stop using the fireplace until a new cap is on, and pick up any pieces on the roof before they damage shingles or tile.

Do chimney caps affect the draft?

A properly sized cap with a clean screen has almost no effect on draft. Trouble starts when the cap is too low over the flue, the screen is clogged with soot or the wrong style catches wind. When smoke spills into the room after a cap change, we check the height and the mesh first.

Are chimney caps all the same size?

No. Flue tiles come in many sizes and shapes, and crowns vary from home to home. Multi flue caps are often made to measure; that is why we measure the flue and the crown on the roof before ordering anything, rather than guessing from the driveway.

Is a chimney cap necessary?

For almost every chimney, yes. A chimney cap keeps rain out of the flue and the damper, blocks birds and animals and stops sparks from landing on the roof. Without one, water and debris reach the firebox every time it rains hard.

When should a chimney cap be replaced?

Replace the chimney cap once rust has eaten through the lid or legs, or when the screen has torn. A cap that rattles in wind is close to failing, and a quick look during the yearly sweep tells you which stage yours has reached.
