Short answer

Fireplace repair covers the parts inside the house: the firebox walls and floor, the damper, the smoke chamber, the hearth and the surround. Our Stuart crew finds why a fireplace smokes, leaks heat or has cracked firebrick, then repairs that part so you can use the fireplace safely again.

The Parts of a Fireplace We Repair

A masonry fireplace is a firebox lined with firebrick, a damper that opens and closes the flue, a smoke chamber that funnels smoke into the chimney, and a hearth that protects the floor in front. Each part takes heat and wear differently, so masonry fireplace repair starts by finding which one is failing.

Wood burning fireplace repair often means replacing cracked firebrick, repointing the joints with heat-resistant mortar, fixing or replacing the damper and resetting loose hearth tile.

Smoke in the Room

A fireplace that smokes usually has one of a handful of causes: a damper that does not open fully, a smoke chamber that is rough or damaged, a flue that is too small for the opening, a house that is starved of air, or a blockage higher up. We test with a small fire and check each cause in turn rather than guessing.

Dampers and Heat Loss

A rusted or warped damper lets warm or cool air escape up the chimney all year and lets humid air and smells come down. We repair the damper when we can, and when we cannot, we replace it or fit a top-sealing damper at the chimney top that closes tightly.

Factory-Built Fireplaces

Some fireplaces are factory-built, with refractory panels and a metal flue instead of brick. These are repaired only with the maker's listed parts, so we read the data plate before ordering anything. A wood fireplace repair on one of these units is a different job from a masonry one, and we treat it that way.

Regular Fireplace Maintenance

Fireplace maintenance is simple when it is regular: a sweep when soot builds up, a check of the damper and firebox, and a look at the hearth. Our fireplace repair service can set a routine that fits how often you actually light a fire, and as a fireplace repair company we would rather fix a small crack than a failed firebox. If you just want a quick fireplace fix before the holidays, that is a fine place to start.

How a Fireplace Repair Goes

  1. Look at every part

Firebox, damper, smoke chamber, hearth and surround.

  2. Test the draft

A small fire shows how the smoke behaves.

  3. Repair the cause

Firebrick, damper or hearth repaired with the right materials.

  4. Clean up

The hearth and room left as we found them.

What the Written Estimate Covers

  2. Finding the cause of smoke or odor problems
  3. Repairing or replacing the damaged parts

Questions We Answer Often

Why does my fireplace smell musty?

A musty smell usually means moisture is reaching the firebox or the flue and mixing with old soot. Rain past a damaged cap or a leaky damper are the usual causes in humid Florida weather; a cleaning, a sealing damper and a sound cap normally clear it.

Can a fireplace leak carbon monoxide?

Yes. A fireplace can push carbon monoxide into the room when the flue is blocked or the damper is closed during a fire. A house starved of air does the same. Keep a working carbon monoxide alarm near any fireplace, and if it sounds, get everyone outside and call 911 first.

Should the fireplace damper be open or closed?

Open the damper fully before lighting a fire and keep it open until the ashes in the firebox are completely cold. Close it the rest of the time, so outside air, insects and humid air stay out of the house.

What does water damage in a fireplace look like?

Water damage shows as rust on the damper and grate, white stains or crumbling mortar in the firebox and a stained or loose hearth. You may also notice a musty smell after rain. The water itself usually comes from higher up the chimney, so the source has to be fixed before the fireplace parts are repaired.

Can cracked firebrick be repaired?

Hairline cracks in firebrick are normal and can usually be left alone or filled with refractory mortar. Bricks that are broken through, loose or missing need replacing, because heat can then reach the masonry behind them. We show you which cracks matter before quoting anything.

Why does smoke come into the room when I light a fire?

Smoke spills into the room when the damper is not fully open or the flue is cold or blocked. An opening too large for the flue, or a house short of air, has the same effect. Warming the flue first and cracking a window often helps; a closer check finds any cause that remains.
