Short answer

Flue repair restores the inside of the chimney so smoke, heat and gases stay sealed in the flue. Cracked flue tile repair, filling open joints and chimney flue resurfacing can fix limited damage, while badly broken tiles usually mean a new stainless steel liner instead. The choice depends on how much of the flue is damaged.

Why Flue Tiles Crack

Clay flue tiles crack from rapid heating during a hot fire, from a chimney fire, from settling, and from water that gets into the flue and wears at the joints. The damage is invisible from the room, which is why flue tile repair often starts after a sweep turns up pieces of tile or a smoky smell that will not go away.

Repair, Resurface or Reline

Small cracks and open joints in an otherwise sound flue can be repaired by filling the gaps with a heat-rated mortar. Chimney flue resurfacing applies a heat-resistant coating over the inside of the flue to seal cracks and joints along its length. When tiles are broken through, missing or offset, chimney flue tile replacement in place is rarely practical, and a new liner is the usual answer.

Chimney liner repair on a stainless liner is different again: a damaged section or connector can sometimes be replaced, but a liner with holes from corrosion is replaced whole.

Keep Water Out of the Flue

Water makes almost any flue damage worse. A cap with a screen and a sound crown keep rain out of the flue, and that alone slows the wear on tiles and joints.

Questions We Answer Often

How does a chimney flue work?

Hot smoke is lighter than room air, so it rises up the flue and pulls fresh air into the firebox behind it. The flue liner keeps that heat and the gases inside, away from the brick and framing, and the cap at the top keeps rain out.

Why is water dripping from the chimney flue?

Water dripping down the flue usually comes in at the top: a missing cap, a cracked crown or a gap around the flue tile. In some flues, condensation from a gas appliance runs down the walls too. We check the cap and crown first, then the flue itself.

Can rain coming down the flue liner damage it?

Yes. Rain running down a clay flue wears at the mortar joints and can crack tiles as they wet and dry. On a metal liner, standing water speeds corrosion. A cap with a screen and a sound crown keep most of that rain out of the flue.

Can a cracked flue tile be repaired?

A few cracks or open joints can be filled with heat-rated mortar, and many fine cracks can be resurfaced. Tiles that are broken through, offset or missing usually cannot be fixed in place, and relining the flue is the safer choice.

Signs This Job Is Due

The flue is the passage inside the chimney that carries smoke and gases up and out. When its clay tiles crack, joints open or pieces fall away, heat and gases can reach the brick and framing. Our Stuart crew finds the damage during a sweep or inspection and explains whether flue repair, resurfacing or a new liner fits.

  • Pieces of clay tile falling into the firebox
  • Cracks or gaps seen during a sweep
  • Smoke smell in rooms next to the chimney
  • A chimney fire in the past
  • Water dripping down the inside of the flue
