Short answer

Creosote removal clears the heavy or glazed deposits left in a flue after many fires, the kind a brush alone will not take off. Chimney creosote removal uses rotary cutting tools, chemical treatments that turn glaze brittle, or both, followed by a sweep and an inspection of the flue underneath.

Three Kinds of Creosote

Light creosote is flaky and sweeps out easily. The next stage is crusty and tar-like, and needs more aggressive brushing. The last is glazed creosote, a hard, shiny layer that forms when tar is reheated again and again; it is sometimes called stage 3 creosote. Glazed creosote removal is the hardest of the three and the most important, because glaze burns very hot in a chimney fire.

How We Remove Heavy Creosote

Heavy creosote removal starts with rotary tools: flexible rods spinning cutting heads or chains matched to the flue, which break the deposits off without damaging sound tiles. Where glaze is too hard, we apply a creosote treatment over one or more visits that changes it into a brittle residue a sweep can remove.

Creosote cleaning always ends with a full sweep and an inspection, because heavy buildup sometimes hides cracked tiles or damage from a past chimney fire.

Why It Builds Up

Creosote builds fastest with damp wood, smoldering fires, a damper kept half closed and an oversized or cold flue. Burning dry wood hot and briefly, and keeping the flue warm with an insulated liner, slows it down.

Questions We Answer Often

Why is my chimney leaking creosote?

Creosote mixes with water from rain or condensation and runs down the flue as a dark, tar-like liquid. It usually means heavy buildup in the flue plus a missing cap or a cracked crown letting water in. Both problems need fixing: the creosote removed and the water stopped.

Do chimney cleaning logs remove creosote?

Chimney cleaning logs can loosen light creosote slightly, but they do not remove it. The loosened flakes still fall onto the smoke shelf and must be swept out. They are not a substitute for a sweep, and they do nothing for hard, glazed creosote.

What is the black liquid running from my chimney?

Black liquid from a chimney is usually creosote dissolved in water. Rain enters through a missing cap or a cracked crown, picks up the creosote in the flue and runs down into the firebox or out through the masonry. It stains brick and smells strongly of tar.

Is glazed creosote dangerous?

Yes. Glazed creosote is the most flammable form, and a fire in a glazed flue burns extremely hot and can crack tiles or damage the masonry. Stop using the fireplace until the glaze is removed and the flue has been inspected.

Signs This Job Is Due

Most creosote brushes out during a normal sweep. Some does not: thick, tar-like layers or a hard, shiny glaze that has baked onto the flue. Our Stuart crew identifies which kind your chimney has, then uses rotary tools and creosote treatments to remove it so the flue can be inspected and used safely again.

  • Shiny, tar-like coating inside the flue
  • Thick black crust that a brush slides over
  • A strong smell of tar from the fireplace
  • Black liquid running from the chimney or firebox
