Short answer

Every gas fireplace that is not vent free needs a vent pipe to carry its exhaust outside. Gas fireplace venting work covers direct vent pipe installation and repair, B vent installation and replacement, and the termination cap on the wall or roof. Each part must be the one listed for the fireplace so the exhaust stays sealed.

Direct Vent and B Vent

A direct vent fireplace uses a two-layer pipe: outside air comes in through the outer space and exhaust leaves through the inner pipe, so the firebox is sealed off from the room. A B vent fireplace draws room air for its flame and sends exhaust up a single-wall-insulated B vent pipe that must rise to the roof. The two systems are not interchangeable.

Vent Repair and Replacement

Gas fireplace vent repair fixes separated joints, missing supports and damaged sections. Gas fireplace vent pipe replacement swaps rusted or crushed pipe for new pipe from the same listed system. B vent pipe replacement and B vent installation follow the same rule. Direct vent fireplace repair often turns out to be a vent problem, since a leak in the pipe can trip the fireplace's safety switch.

Termination Caps

The direct vent termination cap on the outside wall or roof must keep its listed distance from windows, doors, soffits and walkways. Caps rust and get blocked by nests or lawn debris, and a damaged cap lets exhaust swirl back. We replace caps with the listed part and add a guard where people walk past.

Questions We Answer Often

How are gas fireplaces vented?

Most gas fireplaces are direct vent, with a sealed two-layer pipe running through a wall or the roof. Others use a B vent that runs up to the roof, or vent through a liner in an existing chimney. Vent free units are the exception and have no vent.

Does every gas fireplace need a vent?

No. Vented fireplaces and inserts need a vent to carry exhaust outside. Vent free units are built to burn without one, using an oxygen depletion sensor, but local rules and the room size limit where they can go, so most homes use vented models.

Does a gas fireplace have a flue?

A gas fireplace has a vent rather than a masonry flue in most cases. Direct vent units use their own sealed pipe, while gas logs and some inserts use an existing chimney flue, usually with a liner sized for gas. Either way, the vent must stay sealed and clear from the firebox to the cap.

Why is there soot by my gas fireplace vent cap?

Soot near the vent cap means the fireplace is burning dirty, usually from logs out of position, a dirty burner or a partly blocked vent. Turn the fireplace off and have the burner and vent checked; the cap itself may also need cleaning or replacing.

Signs This Job Is Due

Every vented gas fireplace depends on its vent pipe to carry exhaust outside. Pipes separate, rust or get crushed, and termination caps blow off or get blocked by nests. Our Stuart crew repairs and replaces gas fireplace vent pipe, fits the listed termination cap and checks the clearances around it.

  • Soot on the wall or roof near the termination cap
  • A termination cap missing, bent or blocked
  • Separated or rusted vent pipe in the attic or chase
  • Condensation or rust stains below the vent
  • The fireplace shutting off after running a while
