Short answer
Spalling brick repair replaces chimney bricks whose faces have flaked, popped or cracked because water got inside them. Our crew cuts out each damaged brick, sets a matched replacement in fresh mortar and repoints the joints, then fixes the cap, crown or mortar that let water soak the brick in the first place.

Why Bricks Spall
Brick is porous. When water soaks in and then moves, dries and carries salts to the surface, it can push the outer face of the brick off in flakes. That is spalling. In Florida the cycle is driven by long rains followed by hot sun, and it usually starts near the top of the chimney where the masonry is wettest.
Spalled brick replacement only lasts if the water source is fixed too. A cracked crown, a missing cap or washed-out mortar above the damage are the usual culprits.
How We Replace Chimney Bricks
We cut out the mortar around each damaged brick, remove it in pieces so the bricks around it stay put, clean the opening and set a replacement in fresh mortar. The joints are then tooled to match. To replace chimney bricks in a way that blends in, we source brick close in size, color and texture, and reuse sound salvaged brick when it matches better.
Chimney brick spalling repair on many bricks in one area may point to a bigger problem, and then we discuss relaying that section instead.
Cracked Chimney Brick Replacement
A single cracked brick may be cosmetic. Several cracked bricks in a line usually mean movement or a failed crown above them. Cracked chimney brick replacement comes after we understand why the cracks formed, so the new bricks do not crack the same way.
Questions We Answer Often
What is the white powder on my chimney brick?
The white powder is efflorescence: salts carried out of the brick and mortar by water, left behind when the water dries. Efflorescence itself is harmless, but it shows that water is moving through the masonry, often from a cracked crown, a missing cap or worn mortar.
Is efflorescence harmful to a chimney?
The salt deposit itself is not harmful to the chimney, though the water behind it is. Repeated soaking leads to spalling brick, crumbling mortar and rust on the damper inside. Treat efflorescence as an early warning and find where the water enters before the damage spreads.
How is efflorescence removed from a chimney?
First the water source is fixed, otherwise the stain returns. Then the dry salts are brushed off with a stiff brush, and stubborn deposits are cleaned with a masonry cleaner made for efflorescence. A breathable water repellent afterward helps keep the brick drier.
Will new bricks match my chimney?
We match size, color and texture as closely as available brick allows, and use sound salvaged brick where it matches better than new. New brick may look slightly brighter at first; it tones down as it weathers in the sun and rain over the following seasons.
